"Pat O'Connell came through and grabbed that board that Italo made. I have as much fun today as the first board I shaped," Patterson says. That's what I love about shaping boards, it's rad just to be in the shaping bay with someone talking shop and making surfboards. I cleaned it up a little, but it turned out pretty good, he was psyched. "The last time he was in here I gave him a blank and let him shape it. In a similar vein, Kelly Slater's continued experimentation with different design concepts over the last few years, while entertaining and enlightening, has sometimes hampered his results because of the lack of a consistent and specific design.īut more than anything, for Patterson, as well as Ferreira, it's about performing in the water and keeping it fun and loose. The result was he often appeared lost when it came to equipment choices. Jordy Smith's early years on Tour were plagued by ordering boards from anyone under the sun. "There's a lot to be said for consistency when it comes to shaping for these guys." There are so many design options and so many materials out there, for the surfers, that can create a lot of noise and confusion," Patterson says. "You build this trust and you keep working on things until you get it right. Surf prodigy Matt Archbold advanced aerial progression in the 1980s and continues riding Patterson's boards. Both surfers have been working with their respective shapers since they were kids. He points to Kolohe Andino and Matt Biolos and John John Florence and Jon Pyzel as prime examples. Patterson notes that the most successful Tour surfers tend to be the ones that have longstanding relationships with their shapers. We're not trying to reinvent the wheel, we're trying to give Italo something that works to the point where he doesn't have to think about it when it's under his feet." "You find what works and make subtle adjustments from there. "You don't want to overthink things, that's easy to do," Patterson said. Same thing with the fin placement, his thruster measurements have remained consistent over the years. It fits perfectly on the boards that Ferreira is riding today. He has a rail template that reads "Matt Archbold" that he made 20 years ago. Patterson's also artfully tucking under the rails the same as he ever has. "You can take a couple inches off the nose and add some width to the front of board instead, but it's the same entry and exit rocker." Ferreira inhereting the legacy of Fletcher and Archbold as he pushes the boudaries of what is possible in the air. It works, we know it works, so why mess with it? Length and outlines change, like boards have gotten shorter and wider, but the rocker hasn't changed," explained Patterson. "The rocker for Archy's boards, Adriano's boards and Italo's boards are pretty much the same. But Patterson admits, it's a tried and true formula. The collective fruits of their labor were on display at both the Airborne and Quik Pro Gold Coast events, where Ferreira was able to launch himself to the highest of heights. Technology has helped solve some logistical issues as Patterson is able to send digital files of the boards he designs to his partners in Brazil, Silver Surf, where nearly 75-percent of Ferreira's boards are actually made. Patterson and Ferreira's work together has been paying off ever since. "Pinga brought him to me when he was like 12 years old and said, ‘I've got this kid that needs some help with his boards.' He was so small when I first met him," Patterson explained. Luiz "Pinga" Campos was managing De Souza during his San Clemente stay, and it's Pinga who first connected Ferreira with Patterson. It's epic because, salt of the earth or surf star, we're all living this rad surf life together." Timmy Patterson finishing a board for Ferreira at his factory in San Clemente, California. He was hanging with all the glassers and sanders. That's what real surf community and surf culture is - to me anyway." Patterson continued, "I have barbecues at my shop all the time for all the workers just because that's what we do, it's a family. "Maybe it's the Hawaiian influence on my family, but we're always welcoming people in and feeding them and giving them a place to stay. Jadson Andre is another Brazilian Tour surfer who's spent time under the Patterson roof. Not only did he make boards for De Souza during his World Title run, but De Souza actually lived with him in San Clemente when he dedicated himself to improving his game at Lower Trestles. So, how exactly did Ferreira come into Patterson's orbit? Patterson has always had a strong relationship with the Brazilian contingent. I was literally born into this life," Patterson joked this week from his surfboard factory in San Clemente. "My mom would walk through the factory to come visit my dad when she was pregnant with me. From his humble roots to explosive aerial game, WSL filmmakers explore the life of the new World No.

This helps reduce general wear and tear damage. You can place this small VGA, waterproof camera in convenient areas without exposure. The camera set also comes with a rearview camera. So you can see each subject, like a car, clearly and smoothly through the video playback. It records at 30 frames per second (fps). The camera element gives you a super clear, Full HD view of the road. The Orskey S800 is a dash cam built for clarity. Field of View: 170 degrees (front) and 140 degrees (rear). So what is the best dash cam on the market? Let’s dive into 17 dash cams that span a range of prices, features, and sizes. Even though dash cams may cost a bit of money, they can save you a great deal in the future! Best Dash Cams The epitome of this is an Uber driver or other private taxi companies. With these points in mind, a dash cam is for any driver! But dash cams are most relevant for people who drive daily in busy areas. You can leave the dash cam recording with your car parked in an unfamiliar spot. Apart from this, dash cams also deter thieves. Some car insurances allow your footage to be reviewed to determine if you are a safe driver. Others have smart features that help you identify hazards.ĭash cams can also help lower your car insurance premium. Some cameras come in sets where you can attach a rearview camera. Now, you can find dash cams packed with a range of features. This technology has been around for a while. Regular dash cams simply record the road in front of you. Then you can use the videos as evidence if anything were to happen. It can show how other drivers act in front of your car. A dash cam is almost like having an extra set of eyes with you that can replay at any time. That’s because dash cams record what is happening in front of your car. The last thing you’ll want during an incident is to find your dash cam’s battery ran out.A dash cam is for any driver who wants to improve security in their car and on daily drives. While some dash cams can be charged up and run without being always plugged in, our recommendation is to have your dash cam continuously plugged into a source of power. If you’re a rideshare driver, we certainly recommend purchasing a dash cam that does, however. As a result, anything happening outside the car that you might want to hear will not be as audible as what’s going inside the vehicle. Do remember that the sound recorded will be from inside your vehicle and not outside. Some do, and some don’t - although a vast majority will. Take some time before you buy to look over sample night-vision footage, so you get the best bang for your buck. We’ve seen considerable variability in the quality of night vision footage between dash cams - even ones of similar price. What we will caution is not all night vision is created equal. Do dash cams have night vision?Ī majority of midrange and higher-end dash cams will have night vision - and even some cheaper cams, too. Dash cam video could help keep your rates lower since you’ll have a video of what happened in the accident. In many insurance claims for accidents, what happens can quickly become a case of “he said, she said.” Without video evidence, you could find yourself partially at fault for an accident that might not have been your fault at all. However, having a dash cam installed could keep your rates low in the long run. As far as we know at the moment, no insurance companies provide any discount for installing a dash cam inside your car. While there are 4K dash cams now available, in most cases, you’ll likely be able to settle for 1080p without losing much picture clarity. You’ll also want to look at some sample footage first (many dash cams have reviews on YouTube that include this). Again, for rideshare drivers night vision inside will be preferable - many of us drive at night, so being able to see what’s going on inside the car clearly in the dark is beneficial.Īs far as resolution goes, look for a camera with a resolution of at least 1080p. At night, cheaper dash cams won’t provide the detail you need to make the footage useful. We’d also recommend a camera with night vision capabilities both inside and out. Rideshare drivers should choose a camera that offers an interior view as well because in the event of an incident, you’ll want evidence of what is going on inside the car as well. Remember, accidents won’t always happen in front of you - sometimes you’ll be hit from behind. While front view-only cameras are cheaper, we do recommend cameras that offer either interior or rearview cameras as well. More expensive cameras will either provide you with a view inside your car, or a secondary camera that you can place in your rear windshield to see behind your car. Every dash cam will obviously give you a frontside view of what’s going on ahead of you - the cheapest offering only this view. Which dash cam you choose depends on your needs. This season, expect to see an array of the show’s writers in the interstitials between sketches, slots previously occupied by man-on-the-street interview segments. “Some of those sketches feel extra relevant in a way that is so deeply disturbing.” “I feel really disheartened about how much of our show holds up,” Schumer says of her more politically pointed sketches from the show’s past, like one in that most recent 2016 season where an all-male congressional committee stands in as gynecologist for a horrified Schumer. Google “types of metaphors” and you’ll get hundreds of blog posts and scholarly articles with lists of metaphors ranging from 3 to 20+ different type (see: conceptual metaphors, cognitive metaphors, generative metaphors, etc.).įocus on the 6 most common types of metaphors: 1. Extended Metaphors (aka Sustained Metaphors).Common Metaphors (aka Direct Metaphors, Primary Metaphors, or Conventional Metaphors). What are The Different Types of Metaphors? On the other hand, “your suitcase weighs a ton” is hyperbole (not a metaphor). An example would be, “cry me a river.” Obviously, no one can possibly shed that many tears. If a metaphor is clearly an exaggeration, it can be described as a hyperbolic metaphor. But here are the facts: Hyperbole always uses exaggeration, whereas metaphors sometimes do. I was quaking from head to foot, and could have hung my hat on my eyes, they stuck out so far.” - from “Old Times on the Mississippi” by Mark Twainĭifference Between Hyperbole and Metaphors: There is a gray area between the two and it’s often debated. Rowlingĭifference Between Analogies and Metaphors: While a metaphor uses a word or phrase to represent an idea, an analogy uses narrative or comparisons to explain the idea. While a simile compares two different things, an analogy explains the similarities or relationships between two different things.Įxample of Analogy: “Longbottom, if brains were gold, you’d be poorer than Weasley, and that’s saying something.” - from ‘Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone’ by J.K. To the latter example: Obviously, he wasn’t boiling, or he’d be dead. Where a metaphor states that something is something else, a simile compares two different things by using “like” or “as.”Įxample of Simile: “ Elderly American ladies leaning on their canes listed toward me like towers of Pisa.” - from ‘Lolita’ by Vladimir Nabokovĭifference Between Similes and Metaphors: A simile directly compares two things using “like” or “as” (“ he was mad as hell”), while a metaphor implicitly states a comparison, without intending it to be taken literally (“ he was boiling mad”). Simile Definition: A simile is the metaphor’s first cousin. There are several other figures of speech that use figurative language, including similes, analogies, metonymy, and hyperbole - which are often confused with metaphors.īack to Top What’s the Difference Between Metaphors and Similes, Analogies, or Hyperbole? Similes It’s a technique often found in metaphors. This type of figurative language is known as “personification,” which uses human qualities (stroking) to better illustrate a non-human action or thing (the sunshine). The figurative language makes it more vibrant than something like, “the first rays of sunshine woke me up.” We all know sunshine can’t literally stroke your face, but we can all relate to the sensation. “The first rays of sunshine gently stroked my face.” It allows you to paint vivid pictures, punch home your meaning, and be more persuasive as a writer.Ī metaphor is one of several figure-of-speech devices that uses figurative language. Figurative language is a technique that supercharges your reader’s imagination by taking a flat (or factual) statement and injecting it with life, color, or humor to make it more interesting. Recent accolades include the 2010 "Top Recommended" minivan award, U.S. The Odyssey has won numerous awards and critical acclaim. Both the concept and production vehicles, along with all development activity for the 2011 Odyssey, are being designed at Honda R&D Americas in Torrance, California, and Raymond, Ohio. The Odyssey has been America's best-selling minivan2 since 2008 and is produced exclusively in Alabama by Honda Manufacturing of Alabama (using domestic and globally sourced parts). "Odyssey then further delighted customers with its surprisingly engaging, fun-to-drive and dynamic nature. "The Odyssey established its reputation by providing families with what they most want in a minivan – great functionality, an emphasis on safety and good fuel economy," said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of American Honda product planning. Forthcoming improvements to the production Odyssey's interior are designed to further enhance the current model's accommodating space for people and cargo. Compared to the current Odyssey, the Concept's slightly lower roofline (-1.0 inch) and wider stance (+1.4 inch) contribute to a sleeker, stronger and more dynamic presence with improved aerodynamics that help increase fuel economy. The Odyssey Concept dramatically departs from conventional minivan styling with its low and wide stance, highlighted by a "lightning-bolt" beltline that further distinguishes the vehicle's profile. 10, 2010 – The Honda Odyssey Concept, on display at the Chicago Auto Show, introduces a sleek and distinctive exterior styling direction for the next generation of the industry's best-selling minivan, set to debut this fall, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.
